Biography of Marouf al-Bakhit

Marouf Sulaiman al-Bakhit, also known as Marouf al-Bakhit, was born in 1947 in the small town of Mahis, located 10 km from the capital city of Amman. He is a prominent Jordanian politician who has held various high-ranking positions throughout his career.

Education and Academic Achievements

Marouf al-Bakhit completed his Bachelor's degree in Management and Policy at the University of Jordan. He later pursued his studies at the University of Southern California, where he obtained a Master's degree. He defended his doctoral dissertation on military studies at the Royal College of London. His extensive academic achievements include numerous honorary degrees and titles, as well as sixteen medals and awards in various fields of culture and science.

Military Career

In 1964, Marouf al-Bakhit began his service in the Jordanian Armed Forces. In 1966, he graduated from the Royal Military College with the rank of Senior Lieutenant. He concluded his military career in 1999 as a Major General after thirty-five years of service. Throughout his military tenure, he held various leadership positions, including the presidency of the University of Military Affairs and the directorship of military research, supply, and personnel.

Political Career

Marouf al-Bakhit's political career began with his appointment as Jordan's ambassador to Turkey until 2005, after which he served as the ambassador to Israel. He then assumed the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan and became an active figure in the Middle East, advocating for disarmament and peaceful conflict resolution in the region.

Prime Minister and Civil Activism

From November 27, 2005, to November 25, 2007, Marouf al-Bakhit served as the Prime Minister of Jordan. He was appointed by King Abdullah II just three weeks after the terrorist attacks on the capital city's five-star hotels in 2005. Notably, he became the first military personnel to hold the position of Prime Minister. Following his term as Prime Minister, he took a temporary break from his political career and became a member of the Higher Steering Committee and the Organization for Peaceful Cooperation from 1999-2002.
