Biography of Jorge Fernando Castro
Early Life and Professional DebutBorn in Argentina, Jorge Fernando Castro began his professional boxing career in February 1987. Initially, he faced primarily mediocre opponents in his home country.
Title Contentions and First Major Fight
In December 1991, Castro suffered a setback in a WBC welterweight title fight against Terry Norris. However, in June 1992, he faced the undefeated Roy Jones Jr. in a highly anticipated bout. Despite Castro's efforts, Jones' superior speed and accuracy led to a unanimous decision victory.
WBA Middleweight Championship Reign
In August 1994, Castro captured the vacant WBA middleweight title with a split decision victory over Reggie Johnson. He successfully defended his belt against Alex Ramos in November and defeated John David Jackson in December, earning the "Fight of the Year" award from The Ring magazine.
Title Losses and Notable Fights
Castro lost his WBA title in a rematch with Reggie Johnson in October 1995. He faced Shinji Takehara in Japan in December 1995, losing by points. In subsequent fights, Castro defeated Roberto Durán in February 1997 but lost the rematch in June 1997.
Heavyweight Contention and Later Career
Castro continued his career in the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. He lost to WBC cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez in December 2000 but defeated Imamu Mayfield in October 2001. Despite his efforts, he fell short against Vasilly Jirov in February 2002 and Paul Briggs in April 2003.
Retirement
In May 2005, Castro fought in an eliminator against Derrick Harmon and emerged victorious. He retired from boxing in January 2007, having competed in multiple weight classes and faced some of the greatest fighters of his era.
