Graham Smith was born in Bexley, England, in 1938. His initial foray into art began in 1956 when he enrolled at Bromley College of Art, graduating with distinction in 1957. His pursuit of higher education continued in 1958 when he entered the Royal College of Art in London, where he graduated in 1959 with a degree in Fashion Design.
Paris and London
Smith's early work demonstrated his flair and creativity, earning him high marks from his professors. Upon graduating, he embarked on a career at Lanvin-Castillo in Paris. Gaining valuable experience and connections in the fashion world, he returned to London in 1960 to work for the renowned English fashion designer, Michael.
Own Hat Shop and Collaborations
In 1967, Smith established his own hat shop. His creations graced the runways of various famous designers, including Gina Muir, Zandra Rhodes, and many others. Smith's hats became integral parts of their collections.
Kangol Hat Company
In 1981, Smith joined Kangol Hat Company, where he successfully created new collections based on both the company's classic berets and kepis and his own unique designs. The 1980s witnessed a surge in the popularity of Smith's hats, with prominent socialites and celebrities becoming ardent supporters. His most famous clients included the late Princess Diana and the Duchess of York, along with other members of the royal family.
Proportion and Balance
