Early Life and Education
Born into a political family, the Armenian statesman was a graduate of the Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute (1948-1953). He studied geography and later pursued a postgraduate degree in economics at the Armenian State Pedagogical Institute named after Kh. Abovyan (1958-1962).
Military Service and Early Career
During World War II, he served in the Soviet Army (1943-1946). Upon his return, he worked as a teacher in the village of Arajadzor (1941-1943). From 1946 to 1954, he held positions within the Komsomol youth organization.
Local Leadership
In 1954, he became the director of a school before moving on to lead the Department of National Education for the Kirovakan City Council (1954-1959). He then served as Secretary, Second Secretary, and ultimately First Secretary of the Kirovakan City Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia (1959-1967).
National Prominence
In 1967, he joined the apparatus of the CPSU Central Committee. From 1973 to 1975, he headed the Department of Party Organization for the Communist Party of Armenia (KPA). He subsequently became a Secretary and member of the KPA Central Committee (1975-1985).
Leadership in the Armenian SSR
From 1985 to 1990, he served as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR. During his tenure, he was awarded numerous honors, including five honorary diplomas from the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR and several orders and medals from foreign countries.
Post-Soviet Career
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he continued to serve in Parliament as a member of the standing commission for state and legal affairs (1999-2003). He remained active within the Communist Party of Armenia, serving as its leader and later as a member.
Recognition and Legacy
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to public life, he was awarded the Order of St. Mesrop Mashtots by the President of Armenia in 2004.
