Contracting the InfectionA 48-year-old British man, Greg Manteufel, a lifelong dog lover, contracted the rare capnocytophaga bacteria through close contact with his own pet. The infection rapidly spread, forcing doctors to amputate his limbs and remove parts of his nose.
Initial Symptoms and Diagnosis
Manteufel initially sought medical attention at an emergency room, where doctors initially suspected influenza. However, further testing revealed the presence of capnocytophaga bacteria, which is commonly found in dog saliva.
Capnocytophaga Infection
Transmission and EffectsCapnocytophaga bacteria can cause severe illness in individuals with weakened immune systems, spreading through bites or close contact with infected animals. Symptoms include blisters, fever, diarrhea, and muscle and joint pain. Untreated, severe infections can become fatal within 72 hours.
Manteufel's Case
Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price, an infectious disease specialist, stated that the infection "severely affected his entire body." In Manteufel's case, blood flow to his limbs was compromised, causing them to turn black.
Devastating Consequences
AmputationsWithin a week, Manteufel lost both his legs. Subsequent surgeries removed portions of his hands and later, his arms up to the mid-forearm.
Additional Complications
The bacteria and sepsis also affected Manteufel's nose, necessitating extensive plastic surgery to reconstruct a viable one.
