Greta Van Susteren's Early Life and Education
Greta Van Susteren was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, of mixed Dutch, Irish, French, German, and Icelandic heritage. Her father, Urban Van Susteren, was a judge and close associate of Senator Joseph McCarthy, although they later fell out.
Greta graduated from high school in 1972 and from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1976, studying geography and economics. She then attended Georgetown University Law School, graduating with a law degree in 1979.
Legal Career and Television Debut
Van Susteren had a successful career as a civil and criminal lawyer. She also provided legal commentary on television, notably on CNN during the O.J. Simpson case.
Transition to Fox News
In 2002, Van Susteren made a high-profile move to Fox News Channel, amidst a bidding war between networks. She has hosted the news program "On the Record w/ Greta Van Susteren" on Fox News ever since.
Personal Life and Scientology
Greta Van Susteren married lawyer John Coale in 1988. Coale is known for his support of Sarah Palin and his efforts to represent victims of the Bhopal chemical plant disaster in India. Greta and John are both members of the Church of Scientology.
Dutch Mill Tribute
In honor of her Dutch ancestry, Greta Van Susteren serves as honorary chair of the Little Chute Mill Committee, which is overseeing the construction of an authentic Dutch windmill in Little Chute, Wisconsin, where her relatives once lived.
