Early Life and Career

Mihai Cimpoi was born on April 22, 1935, in the village of Tyrnovo, in what is now Moldova. He graduated from the Frunze Institute of Agriculture in Chisinau and the Higher Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).

Komsomol and Government Positions

Cimpoi began his career in 1952 as the head of a rural library. After serving in the Soviet Army (1954-1956), he entered the Komsomol (Young Communist League) and held various positions, including First Secretary of the Raikom (district committee) of the Komsomol and Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Moldova. He then worked as an instructor in the Council of Ministers of the Moldavian SSR.

Party Leadership

From 1966 to 1970, Cimpoi served as First Secretary of the Kotoray Raikom of the Communist Party. He subsequently held positions as Deputy and First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Moldavian SSR (1970-1980). In 1980, he was appointed Chairman of the Moldavian Republican Council of Trade Unions, and in 1990, he became Chairman of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Moldova.

Criticism and Rise to Power

At the XVII Congress of the Moldavian Communist Party in February 1990, Cimpoi faced criticism and was not elected to the Central Committee. However, in February 1991, he was appointed as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Moldavian Communist Party, replacing Petru Luchinsky. In April 1991, he was elected as a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU.

Transition to a New Era

Cimpoi served as a People's Deputy of the USSR from 1989 to 1991. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he became an advisor to the General Director of the "Maison" Production Association and later served as Ambassador of Moldova to Belarus (1993-1994) and Romania (1994-1998). Since 1998, he has been a member of the Moldavian Parliament.
