Early Life and EducationArmenian Roots and Revolutionary Beginnings
Born in Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi) into an Armenian family with military connections, Shahumyan embarked on his revolutionary path in 1905.
Student Activism in Moscow
From 1907, he studied at Moscow University, where he led the Caucasian Student Association and became actively involved in revolutionary politics. His involvement resulted in his expulsion from the university.
Military Service and Propaganda
After completing his compulsory military service in 1914, Shahumyan graduated from Moscow University's Faculty of History and Philology. Mobilized to the Caucasus Front, he strategically disseminated revolutionary propaganda within the army.
Political Ascendancy
Tbilisi Congress and Bolshevik InfluenceFollowing the February Revolution of 1917, Shahumyan became a prominent organizer of army self-governance. He headed the Bolshevik faction at the First Congress of the Caucasian Army in Tbilisi (May 1917) and later chaired the Second Congress (December 1917).
Baku Revolution and Defense
Committee Leadership and Military RoleFrom March 1918, Shahumyan joined the Committee of Revolutionary Defense in Baku. As People's Commissar of Naval Affairs (April 1918), he orchestrated the resistance against invading Azerbaijani and Turkish forces.
Fall of the Bolshevik Regime
Despite their valiant efforts, Baku's Bolshevik government ultimately collapsed. Shahumyan was forced to flee the city but was captured and executed as one of the infamous 26 Baku Commissars.
