Armenian Revolutionary and Bolshevik Leader

Early Life and Education
Armenian Roots and Revolutionary Beginnings

Born in Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi) into an Armenian family with military connections, Shahumyan embarked on his revolutionary path in 1905.

Student Activism in Moscow

From 1907, he studied at Moscow University, where he led the Caucasian Student Association and became actively involved in revolutionary politics. His involvement resulted in his expulsion from the university.

Military Service and Propaganda

After completing his compulsory military service in 1914, Shahumyan graduated from Moscow University's Faculty of History and Philology. Mobilized to the Caucasus Front, he strategically disseminated revolutionary propaganda within the army.

Political Ascendancy

Tbilisi Congress and Bolshevik Influence

Following the February Revolution of 1917, Shahumyan became a prominent organizer of army self-governance. He headed the Bolshevik faction at the First Congress of the Caucasian Army in Tbilisi (May 1917) and later chaired the Second Congress (December 1917).

Baku Revolution and Defense

Committee Leadership and Military Role

From March 1918, Shahumyan joined the Committee of Revolutionary Defense in Baku. As People's Commissar of Naval Affairs (April 1918), he orchestrated the resistance against invading Azerbaijani and Turkish forces.

Fall of the Bolshevik Regime

Despite their valiant efforts, Baku's Bolshevik government ultimately collapsed. Shahumyan was forced to flee the city but was captured and executed as one of the infamous 26 Baku Commissars.
