Saint Kuksha of the Kiev Caves

Saint Kuksha was a hieromartyr and wonderworker who lived in the 11th century. He is venerated in the Orthodox Church for his miraculous deeds and his role in the life of Prince Rostislav of Pereyaslavl.

Prediction of Prince Rostislav's Death

Kuksha is said to have prophesied the drowning death of Prince Rostislav. Despite the prince's skepticism, the prophecy came true, leading to Kuksha's persecution. Rostislav ordered that he be drowned in the Dnieper River.

Burial in the Kiev Caves

After his martyrdom, Kuksha's body was buried in the Near (Antoniev) Caves of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians.

Veneration in the Orthodox Church

Saint Kuksha is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on January 8 (January 21) and September 28 (October 11), the feast day of the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev-Pechersk Near Caves. He is also venerated on the second Sunday of Great Lent, along with all the Venerable Fathers of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
