King of the Isle of Man
In 1275, Godred became King of the Isle of Man. He was the son of King Magnus Olafsson and Mary of Argyll. After Magnus's death in 1265, the throne was seized, but Godred regained it in 1275.
Political Tensions and the Battle of Largs
Alexander III of Scotland pursued a hostile policy towards the Isle of Man. However, in 1263, after his indecisive victory at the Battle of Largs, his attacks ceased. During the battle, the Norwegian fleet abandoned the Orkney Islands, leaving Scottish forces in control of the disputed territories.
Diplomatic Breakthrough and the Treaty of Perth
After the death of Norwegian King Haakon IV, the more peaceable Magnus VI ascended to the throne. Negotiations with Scotland resulted in the Treaty of Perth, whereby Norway surrendered its islands, including Man, in exchange for 4,000 marks.
Reconquest of the Isle of Man
The Isle of Man was not immediately returned. It was only in 1275, after the decisive Battle of Ronaldsway, that Godred was able to reclaim his throne.
