Guillaume Dombe, a renowned French artist, was born around 1414 in Couzerie, Burgundy. Primarily working in the Provençal cities of Avignon, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence, he specialized in stained glass.

Dombe's most well-known work is the stained glass in the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral in Aix-en-Provence. Dating from 1442-43, these vibrant panels depict Saint Mitre, Saint Blaise, and a holy bishop. They showcase a blend of Burgundian, Provençal, and Dutch artistic influences.

Master of the Annunciation of Aix

Art historians have speculated that Dombe may also be the "Master of the Annunciation of Aix," responsible for the renowned altarpiece in Saint-Sauveur Cathedral. Created between 1443-45, the altarpiece depicts the Annunciation and exhibits a style similar to Dombe's stained glass. However, the identity of this master remains debated among scholars.

Artistic Legacy

Guillaume Dombe's artistic contributions were impressive, although many of his works have been lost. He played a significant role in the development of French art during the first half of the 15th century. Despite the scarcity of surviving pieces, his influence can still be seen in the surviving stained glass and the intricate altarpiece in Saint-Sauveur Cathedral.

Personal Life and Legacy

Dombe's personal life is obscured by the passage of time. He had several children, including three sons who worked in his atelier. He also collaborated with his son-in-law, Arnault de Catz, a painter from Tournai. Dombe died in 1461 and was buried in the Notre-Dame-des-Princes cemetery in Avignon.
