Guntars Krasts: A Political and Business Leader

Early Life and Business Ventures

In the early 1990s, Guntars Krasts co-founded R.A.N.G., a limited liability company that primarily engaged in customs operations and weapons trading.

Political Career

Krasts's political career began in 1995 when he was appointed Minister of Economics of Latvia. He held this position until 1997, when he was elected Prime Minister of Latvia. He served as Prime Minister for a year, resigning in 1998.

Krasts continued to be involved in politics and was elected to the Saeima (Latvian parliament) in 1998 and 2002. From 2004 to 2009, he served as a Member of the European Parliament.

Controversies

In 1994, the Commander of the Border Guard prohibited R.A.N.G. from operating at the border due to suspicions of illegal activities. However, Krasts has never been convicted of any wrongdoing.
