Prince Hassan bin Talal, a prominent member of the Hashemite dynasty, served as Prime Minister of Jordan from December 19, 1979, to July 3, 1980.
Early Life and Education
Prince Hassan descended from the Hashemite Sharifs of Mecca and was a sixth cousin of King Hussein of Jordan. He graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree and a Master's degree in International Relations from the American University of Beirut.
Diplomatic and Government Career
In 1962, Prince Hassan was appointed Director of the Arab Affairs and Palestine Department within the Jordanian Foreign Ministry. His career progressed swiftly, with subsequent appointments as Director-General of Radio Jordan, Assistant Chief of the Royal Court, and Director of the International Organizations Department of the Foreign Ministry.
From 1966 to 1967, Prince Hassan served as Minister of Information. In 1967, he was appointed Jordanian Ambassador to the United States and Canada. In 1972, he became Jordan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Royal Court and Cabinet
In 1976, Prince Hassan was named Chief of the Royal Court, a position he held for three years. On December 19, 1979, he reached the pinnacle of his political career, becoming Prime Minister of Jordan. He concurrently served as Minister of Defense and Foreign Affairs until his untimely passing.
