Gustav Langenscheidt: Pioneer of Distance Learning and Publisher
Gustav Langenscheidt, a German educator and publisher, was born on April 7, 1832.
Education and Military Service
Langenscheidt received a commercial education before serving in the military. His travels broadened his perspective, exposing him to different cultures and languages.
Pioneering Distance Learning
In 1856, Langenscheidt and Charles Toussaint developed a groundbreaking method for teaching foreign languages (French) through distance learning. Their approach emphasized practical tasks, focusing on vocabulary acquisition and conversational skills rather than grammar. This concept of using printed materials for foreign language instruction was revolutionary.
Founding a Publishing Empire
Unable to secure funding from publishers, Langenscheidt established his own company in 1859. He launched "Educational Letters for Learning French," the first in a series of distance learning materials. In 1861, he expanded his offerings to include English, collaborating with Karl von Dalen and Henry Lloyd.
The Langenscheidt Method
The Toussaint-Langenscheidt method gained popularity worldwide. As noted in the Brockhaus Encyclopedia, it was even used to teach German and French to Russian learners.
Encyclopedic Dictionaries
Beyond textbooks, Langenscheidt's publishing house became renowned for its encyclopedic dictionaries. Under his editorship, the "Encyclopedic Franco-German and German-French Dictionary" (1869-1880) and the "Encyclopedic Anglo-German and German-English Dictionary" (1891-1901) were published. The latter was completed by Langenscheidt's son, Karl Georg.
Legacy
Langenscheidt's publishing company continues to operate today. His groundbreaking method of distance learning and his influential dictionaries have left an enduring legacy in language education. He remains an inspiration to educators and publishers alike.
