Early Life and Career
Ivan Matveyevich Ilyin was born in Belarus. In 1918, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and the Red Army, where he participated in requisitioning from wealthy peasants.
Military Service
From 1922 onwards, Ilyin served as a platoon commander in a special unit tasked with suppressing anti-Bolshevik uprisings.
Education and Academic Career
Ilyin pursued higher education, completing a pre-university workers' faculty and then graduating from the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in 1929. He went on to complete an postgraduate degree in 1933 and taught at the Communist University of the Peoples of the West.
Role in Academia and Leadership
In 1935, Ilyin became secretary of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR. In 1937, he was appointed rector of Belarusian State University (BSU). However, he faced criticism for "loss of Bolshevik vigilance" and was dismissed from his post in December 1937.
Imprisonment and Later Life
Ilyin was sent to the Gorky Agricultural Institute in 1938. On August 5, 1938, he was sentenced to eight years in a corrective labor camp in Kolyma. He was released in 1946, but his fate after this point remains unknown.
