Early Life and Education
Gustave Wiederkehr was born in Zürich, Switzerland, on July 5, 1905. He pursued a degree in economics at the University of Bern but was forced to interrupt his studies in 1939 when he was drafted into the Swiss military during World War II.
Career in the Carpet Industry
After the war, Wiederkehr turned his attention to the carpet industry. In 1954, he co-founded a carpet factory in Plüderhausen, Germany. In 1969, he became a founding member of a carpet production company in Wetzikon, Switzerland.
Involvement in Football Administration
Wiederkehr's involvement in football administration began in 1931 when he founded a Catholic football club in Zürich. He later worked with the Young Fellows Juventus club from 1936 to 1950. In 1943, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Nationalliga B, the second division of Swiss football.
In 1946, Wiederkehr was elected to the Committee of the Swiss Football Association (SFV). He served as President of the SFV from 1954 to 1964.
Presidency of UEFA
On April 17, 1962, Wiederkehr was elected President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). He held this position until his death in 1972.
Contributions to UEFA
During his presidency, Wiederkehr greatly expanded the influence of UEFA. In 1963, he established the UEFA Technical Commission, and in 1968, he created the UEFA Referees Committee. He also initiated two major competitions: the UEFA Cup in 1971 and the UEFA European Under-18 Championship in 1972.
Other Notable Achievements
In addition to his roles in UEFA and the SFV, Wiederkehr served as Vice-President of FIFA from 1971 to 1972. He was also a member of the FIFA Executive Committee and five World Cup organizing committees (1954, 1962, 1966, 1970, and 1974).
