Gordon Dierd Bajnai, the current Prime Minister of Hungary, was born on March 5, 1968, and grew up in the city of Baja. He moved to Budapest to study at the University of Economics, now known as Corvinus University. After graduating in 1991, Bajnai worked at Creditum Financial Consulting and interned in London at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Upon returning to Hungary, Bajnai joined Eurocorp International Finance, where he worked alongside future Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. From 1995 to 2000, Bajnai served as the managing director and deputy director at CA IB Securities, overseeing securities for multiple firms. During this time, the current head of the country's central bank, Andras Simor, was leading the company.
In 2000, Gordon Dierd Bajnai became the CEO of Wallis, a company closely associated with the Socialist Party. He also served on the board of directors for Graboplast and Raba. In 2003, he received an award from the National Association of Managers as the "Young Manager of the Year."
Bajnai was responsible for handling the bankruptcy proceedings of Hajdu-Bet, an organization that caused significant losses for many farmers. In 1999, Wallis acquired Hajdu-Bet when it faced bankruptcy. By 2001, the poultry industry, one of the main producers of poultry meat in Hungary, started generating profits again. However, in 2003, the bird flu crisis severely impacted the industry and Hajdu-Bet. Unable to pay its suppliers, the company filed for bankruptcy and was eventually liquidated.
Bajnai began his career in the government as the head of the National Development Agency and later served as the Commissioner for Development Policy from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007. He then replaced Monika Lampert as the Minister of Self-Government and Development.
According to a new book detailing Bajnai's biography, he and future Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány first met in the late 1980s when both were involved in youth politics, co-founding the youth association "New Generation."
