Early Life and Career
Agageldy Mämmetgeldïýew (also spelled Mammetgeldiyev) was born on September 10, 1946, in the village of Yalovach, Tejen district of Ashgabat region. In 1970, he graduated from the military medical faculty of the Saratov Medical Institute, specializing in "medical and preventive care."
Military and Security Positions
- 1970-1994: Held various military medical positions in the Turkestan Military District and the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany.
- 1988: Began teaching at the Turkmen State Medical Institute.
- 1992: Became the head of the military sanatorium in the village of Firuza.
- 1994: Appointed Deputy Minister of Defense for Logistics and Chief of the Main Logistics Directorate of the Turkmen Armed Forces.
- March 5, 2002: Became Head of the State Border Service and Commander of the Border Guard Troops of Turkmenistan.
- September 29, 2003: Became Minister of Defense and Secretary of the State Security Council of Turkmenistan.

2006 Presidential Succession
- December 20, 2006: President Niyazov passed away.- December 21, 2006: Mämmetgeldïýew participated in the State Security Council and government meeting that appointed Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov as acting President, despite constitutional provisions suggesting otherwise.
- December 26, 2006: Was reportedly considered for the chairmanship of the People's Council, which was to select presidential candidates, but was reportedly arrested or placed under house arrest.
- Berdymukhamedov was elected Chairman of the People's Council and later as President of Turkmenistan.
