Khachatryan: A Dedicated Weightlifter and Coach
Khachatryan, an Armenian and former Soviet weightlifter, was a multi-time Armenian champion, European champion, and a two-time world record holder in snatching. In 1990, he was awarded Master of Sports of the USSR of the International Class.
Early Years and Career
Khachatryan's journey in weightlifting began in 1980 under the guidance of Vagan Bichachchyan. In 1990, he made a mark by winning the silver medal at the USSR Championships and the USSR Cup. From 1993 onwards, Khachatryan represented Armenia on the national team.
International Success
In 1993, Khachatryan became the European Champion, followed by a series of podium finishes at the European Championships in 1994, 1995, and 1998. He achieved his crowning glory at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, where he triumphed in the snatch competition.
Tragic End
After retiring from competitive weightlifting in 2000, Khachatryan served as the coach of the Armenian national weightlifting team from 2005 to 2007. However, his life was cut short in a tragic car accident on the Gyumri-Vanadzor highway on September 30, 2007.
Legacy and Tribute
Khachatryan's memory lives on through the legacy he left behind. In 2008, fellow Armenian weightlifter Tigran Martirosyan dedicated his victory at the European Championships in Lignano to Khachatryan's honor.
