Hamid Etemad

Hamid Etemad is a Canadian organizational theorist and professor of management at McGill University. He is most well-known for his work in the field of international entrepreneurship and business, particularly for developing the theory of "internationalization of small and medium enterprises".

Early Life and Education

Hamid Etemad was born in 1945. He earned a Masters of Science in Engineering from the University of Tehran and an MBA, an MS, and a PhD in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.

Academic Career

Before joining McGill University in 1978, where he became a beloved lecturer, Etemad taught at Boston University, UC Berkeley, and the University of San Francisco. At McGill, he was recognized for his accessibility, affability, and insights into international marketing. In 2007, he received the "Decade of Stewardship of International Entrepreneurship Award" from the UCLA Anderson School of Management for his contributions to the field of international entrepreneurship.

Research Interests

Etemad's research interests have centered on the internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises. He founded and directed the International Entrepreneurship Conference (IEC) at McGill University and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of International Entrepreneurship. As a guest editor, he has edited 13 special issues of academic journals, including the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences, Management International Review, and Small Business Economics. Etemad also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Small Business & Enterprise Development and the International Journal of Entrepreneurship & Innovation Management.

Teaching

Etemad teaches courses in international business, international marketing, and internationalization. These courses are designed for MBA students. He also conducts workshops for export sales managers and international marketing executives.

Legacy

Etemad is widely regarded as a founding father of the field of international entrepreneurship. His work has had a significant impact on the understanding and practice of international business.
