László Hammerl: Hungary's Olympic Precision
László Hammerl (1942-2024) was a renowned Hungarian marksman whose exceptional shooting skills earned him an Olympic gold medal and several other accolades.
Triumph in Tokyo
At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the then-university student Hammerl emerged as the leader in prone shooting, winning by a mere one point over American Lones Wigger. His triumph in this segment set a new world record, but he later placed third in the three-position shooting event.
A Stellar Shooting Career
Hammerl participated in four Olympic Games in total, demonstrating his exceptional consistency. In 1968, he received a medical degree from Semmelweis Egyetem and specialized in otolaryngology in 1973.
Coaching and Recognition
In 1996, Hammerl moved to New Zealand to coach the local shooting team. He returned to his homeland three years later to lead the Hungarian national team. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored as a "Nation's Athlete" in 2004.
Family and Legacy
Hammerl was married to Eva Fórián, a fellow Hungarian Olympic shooter. After his passing in Budapest at the age of 82, his legacy as one of Hungary's greatest marksmen continues to inspire generations of aspiring shooters.
