Early Life and Activism
Hanna Sarkkinen was born on April 18, 1988, in Oulunsalo, Finland. From a young age, she displayed a keen interest in politics. At the age of 18, she joined the youth organization of the Left Alliance and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming its deputy chairperson.
Political Career
Sarkkinen's political career began in earnest in 2010 when she became a member of the Left Alliance party council. From 2013 to 2016, she served as the chairperson of the council. In June 2016, she was elected deputy chairperson of the party and remained in that position until 2019.
Local and European Elections
Sarkkinen's electoral success began at the local level. In 2011, she was elected to the Oulu City Council, and in 2012, she increased her vote share significantly. She also contested in the European Parliament elections in 2014 and 2019, garnering a growing number of votes each time.
Parliamentary Elections
Sarkkinen's entry into national politics came in 2015 when she was elected to the Finnish Parliament representing the Oulu constituency. She was re-elected in 2019 with an increased vote count. During her time in Parliament, she served on various committees, including the Finance Committee and the Social Affairs and Health Committee.
Minister of Social Affairs and Health
In June 2021, Sarkkinen was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Health in Prime Minister Sanna Marin's government. She succeeded Aino-Kaisa Pekonen in the position. As minister, she has been responsible for implementing policies related to healthcare, social welfare, and public health.
Personal Life
Sarkkinen married in September 2018, and in December 2019, she welcomed a son into the world. She has expressed that balancing her political career with her personal life is an ongoing challenge that she manages through the support of her family and the implementation of flexible work arrangements.
