José Nicolás de Azara
Early Life and EducationJosé Nicolás de Azara was a Spanish diplomat and art connoisseur. He studied at the universities of Huesca and Salamanca.
Diplomatic Career
In 1765, Azara was appointed Spanish envoy to Rome. There, he joined a circle of scholars and artists, befriending the painter Anton Raphael Mengs and his fellow Spaniard, the scholar Esteban de Arteaga.
As a diplomat, Azara exhibited great skill and exerted significant influence on the relations between the Spanish court and the papal throne. Notably, he contributed to the suppression of the Jesuit order under Pope Clement XIV.
Ambassador to Paris
Azara served as Spanish ambassador to Paris on two occasions: in 1798 and 1802. He died in Paris on 26 January 1804.
Literary Contributions
Azara published the works of his friend Mengs, including his biography.
Legacy
Azara's brother, don Felix de Azara, was a renowned naturalist and traveler.
