Early Life and College Career
Hanno Möttölä, a Finnish professional basketball player, embarked on his basketball journey in the United States at the University of Utah. During his time with the Utes, he honed his skills and prepared for the next chapter of his career.
NBA Draft and Atlanta Hawks Tenure
In 2000, Möttölä made history by becoming the first Finnish player drafted into the NBA. The Atlanta Hawks selected him with the 40th overall pick in the second round. He spent two seasons with the Hawks, marking his entry into the prestigious league.
Journey Through Europe
After his NBA stint, Möttölä returned to Europe and played for several renowned clubs. He represented Spanish giants TAU Cerámica, Italian powerhouses Skipper Bologna and Scavolini Pesaro, Russian contenders Dynamo Moscow, and Lithuanian powerhouse Žalgiris Kaunas.
International Career
Möttölä proudly represented Finland on the international stage. He showcased his talents at the EuroBasket tournaments in 1995, 2011, and 2013, as well as the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
Retirement and Comeback
In 2008, Möttölä announced his retirement from basketball. However, nine months later, the lure of the sport proved irresistible. He returned to the court in 2009, signing with Finnish club Torpan Pojat.
Post-Playing Career
After concluding his playing career, Möttölä transitioned into coaching. As of 2022, he serves as an assistant coach for the Finnish national team, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of Finnish basketball players.
