Hannu Manninen: A Legendary Nordic Combined Skier

Olympic and World Champion

Hannu Manninen (born March 17, 1978) is a renowned Finnish Nordic combined skier who holds notable achievements, including:

Olympic champion in Nordic combined

Three-time world champion
Four-time overall World Cup winner, a record-breaking feat
Early Career and Breakthrough

Manninen made his Olympic debut at the 1994 Lillehammer Games at the young age of 15. His first major success came in March 1996 when he won a World Cup event in Falun, Sweden, at the age of 17. The following year, he won a silver medal in the team event at the World Championships in Trondheim.

Olympic Success and World Cup Dominance

At the 1998 Nagano Olympics, Manninen was part of the Finnish team that won silver in the team event. In 1999, at the World Championships in Ramsau, he became world champion and finished second overall in the World Cup standings that season.

After a third-place finish in the team event at the 2001 World Championships in Lahti, Manninen's career reached new heights at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. He witnessed a complete triumph as Finland won both individual gold medals and the team event.

Manninen's dominance extended beyond Nordic combined, as he also competed in cross-country skiing at Salt Lake City, finishing eighth in the sprint. He continued to achieve podium success in team events at subsequent World Championships.

A Record-Breaking Run

From the 2003/04 season to the 2006/07 season, Manninen won the overall World Cup four consecutive times, setting a record for the most wins in a row and the most overall wins. In the 2005/06 season, he won a remarkable 12 out of 21 World Cup races. With 46 World Cup event victories, he remains the all-time leader in that category.

Disappointing Olympics and Redemption

Despite being considered the favorite heading into the 2006 Turin Olympics, Manninen suffered a disappointing tournament, failing to medal in any individual event and finishing third in the team event.

However, he redeemed himself a year later at the World Championships in Sapporo, Japan. After a disappointing ninth place in the jumping portion, Manninen displayed remarkable endurance to win the 7.5 km cross-country race by a mere 0.3 seconds. He also won gold in the team event and became a world champion alongside his sister, Pirkko Männikkö, who won gold in the women's relay.

Retirement and Return

Manninen retired in 2008 but returned a year later to compete in his fifth Olympics in Vancouver in 2010. He finished second in his first event back and won his 46th World Cup event the following day.
