Hans-Christoph Seebohm: A Life in Politics and Industry

Early Life and Education

Hans-Christoph Seebohm was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1894. After completing his schooling, he began studying mining engineering in Munich and Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1921. He earned his degree in 1928 and worked as a mining engineer in Halle until 1931. In 1932, he obtained his doctorate with a dissertation on the geological study of the area between Hanover, Pyrmont, and Minden.

Professional and Business Career

Following his doctorate, Seebohm held various leadership positions in the mining, oil, and engineering industries. From 1938 to 1939, he served as production manager at the "Słonica" mine and the "Preußengrube AG" in Gleiwitz. He then became director of the "Hohenlohe-Werke AG" mine until 1941. Subsequently, he became chairman of the supervisory board of the "Britannia-Kohlenwerke AG" in Königswinter.

In 1941, Seebohm co-founded the "Egerländer Bergbau AG," a company that managed Czech mining assets until they were nationalized. He also served as vice president of the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce and Industry and became chairman of the association of petroleum and engineering companies in the British occupation zone.

Post-World War II

After World War II, Seebohm became managing director of the "Deilmann AG" oil company in Dortmund (1945-1949) and president of the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce and Industry (1947-1963). From 1959 until his death, he was spokesman for the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft, an organization advocating for the rights of former Sudetenland Germans.

Political Career

Seebohm joined the Lower Saxony State Party in 1945, which later became the German Party. He was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament from 1946 to 1951 and a member of the Bundestag from 1949 until his death. From 1946 to 1948, he served as Minister of Construction, Labor, and Health in the Lower Saxony state government.

In 1952, Seebohm was elected chairman of the German Party. On July 1, 1960, he resigned from the party and joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He became chairman of the Hanover CDU state organization in 1964 and federal treasurer of the party in 1967.

Federal Minister of Transport

From September 20, 1949, to November 30, 1966, Seebohm served as Federal Minister of Transport under Chancellors Konrad Adenauer and Ludwig Erhard. He also briefly served as Vice Chancellor under Erhard. After the formation of the Grand Coalition, he returned to the post of Transport Minister.

Seebohm established the Federal Highway Traffic Authority in 1951 and the Federal Civil Aviation Office in 1953. He held his post for a record 17 years, surpassed only by Hans-Dietrich Genscher who served a total of 23 years in the federal government.
