Biography of Hans Friedrich Blunck
German writer and lawyer.Early Life
Hans Friedrich Blunck was born in the port district of Altona, Hamburg, into a family of school teachers. As a student, Hans studied law at the Christian-Albrechts-University, one of the largest educational institutions in Germany. He furthered his education at Heidelberg University.
World War I and Post-War Career
During World War I, Blunck was called into active duty and was given the rank of an officer. After the war, from 1920 to 1928, he worked as a state advisor and from 1925 to 1928, he was a member of the Senate of the University of Hamburg.
Literary Career
The period between 1920 and 1940 was a prolific time for Hans Blunck's creative endeavors. During these years, he wrote and published numerous novels and stories, which are now viewed as an attempt to align with the path of National Socialism. Blunck was particularly interested in Scandinavian themes and the history of the Hanseatic League, which he tried to align with the ideas of National Socialism. His works intricately intertwined the German pantheon, Norwegian sagas, fairy tales, ghost stories, and Saxon poetry.
Involvement with the Nazis
After the Nazis seized power, on June 7, 1933, Blunck was chosen as the second chairman of the Poetry Committee of the Prussian Academy of Arts, with Hanns Johst serving as the first chairman. In the same year, Blunck became the first president of the Literature Chamber of the Third Reich, responsible for controlling and equalizing all literary production. However, in October 1935, he was removed from this position for incitement. Unlike his predecessor Johst, Hans Blunck was not a member of the Nazi Party and openly spoke out against the persecution of Jewish soldiers who fought in World War I.
Later Years and Death
In 1936, Blunck established a fund for Germans working abroad, aiming to increase the influence of the Third Reich beyond Germany's borders. He became the first president and, in 1940, the honorary president of the fund. After the war, in 1952, Hans Blunck released his memoirs titled "Unwegsame Zeiten" (Difficult Times). He passed away on April 24, 1961, at the age of 72.
