His impressive performances caught the attention of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and he joined the club in 2001. Move to S.L. Benfica and Bayern Munich

After being replaced by a young Rene Adler at Leverkusen, Butt signed a two-year contract with S.L. Benfica in July 2007. In June 2008, Butt signed a two-year contract with FC Bayern Munich. Initially intended as a backup to Michael Rensing, Butt became the starting goalkeeper after Rensing suffered an injury. He made his first appearance for Bayern Munich on May 10, 2009. Butt's performance was crucial in helping the team overcome a difficult start to the 2009-2010 season. On December 8, 2009, he scored his first goal for Bayern Munich against Juventus. Although he missed his first league goal by a narrow margin on January 30, 2010, Butt's contract was extended until 2011.

Later Career and Retirement

In the same year, Butt had the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League final, but Bayern Munich was defeated 2-0 by F.C. Internazionale Milano. In the 2010-2011 season, Butt gradually began to lose his starting position to Thomas Kraft. However, Kraft's performance indicated that Butt still had much to offer, and he regained his position in the starting lineup. On May 3, 2011, Butt signed a one-year contract extension. At the end of the season, the 38-year-old footballer announced his retirement. His last match was a friendly game against the Netherlands on May 22, 2012, where he captained the team.

On July 1, 2012, Butt became the head of Bayern Munich's youth team. However, just a month later, on August 7, he decided to leave the position, feeling disillusioned with the chosen profession. Butt's future plans remain unknown.
