Early Life and Education
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Hans Kosterlitz emigrated to Scotland in 1934 to escape Nazi persecution. He pursued his education at the University of Aberdeen, earning a degree in medicine in 1942.
Career in Pharmacology
After graduating, Kosterlitz remained at the University of Aberdeen, where he held the positions of Lecturer in Pharmacology (1946-1955) and Reader in Pharmacology (1955-1968). In 1968, he was appointed Professor of Pharmacology and Chemistry, a post he held until 1973.
Discovery of Endorphins
In 1975, Kosterlitz collaborated with John Hughes to make a groundbreaking discovery: the existence of endorphins, "internal morphines" produced by the body. This discovery revolutionized our understanding of pain perception and addiction.
Recognition and Legacy
Kosterlitz's work was widely recognized throughout his career. In 1977, he received the Scheele Award. He shared the Albert Lasker Award in 1978 with John Hughes and Solomon Snyder. Kosterlitz's research continues to inspire and inform modern-day research in neuroscience and pain management.
