Early Life and Education

Harold D. Babcock was born in Edgerton, Wisconsin. In 1907, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley.

Professional Career

Babcock began his career at the University of California in 1905-1906. He then worked at the Bureau of Standards from 1906-1908, before joining the Mount Wilson Observatory from 1909-1948. In 1933, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.

Major Contributions

Babcock's primary focus was on solar research and related laboratory studies. He conducted extensive investigations of the Zeeman effect to study the Sun's magnetic field. Using interferometric methods, he obtained highly precise wavelengths for numerous spectral lines, which served as standards for solar spectral measurements.

In 1928, Babcock published comprehensive tables of solar spectral lines, extending Henry Rowland's renowned tables into the ultraviolet and infrared domains. He identified new lines and corrected Rowland's identifications.

Collaboration with His Son

Together with his son, Horace W. Babcock, Babcock refined techniques for measuring the Sun's magnetic field. In 1952, they co-invented the magnetograph, an instrument capable of measuring the magnetic field across the entire solar disk with high spatial resolution and an accuracy of 1 gauss.

Other Notable Achievements

Babcock also determined the precise wavelengths of night sky emission lines. His measurements of oxygen molecular bands enabled Merle T. Piggott and Harold L. Johnston to discover the rare oxygen isotopes O17 and O18. Additionally, he collaborated with Horace W. Babcock to manufacture diffraction gratings of large size and exceptional quality, which were installed on spectrographs at the Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar Observatories.

Honors and Recognition

Babcock received several prestigious awards, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science Prize (1929) and the Bruce Medal of the Pacific Astronomical Society (1953). A lunar crater and asteroid (3167) Babcock were named in his honor and his son's.
