Early Life and Education
Born in England, the renowned composer embarked on his musical journey at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He subsequently honed his craft at the Royal Academy of Music in London before venturing to the United States in 1965.
Professional Career
From 1975 to 1983, he served as the distinguished Music Director of the Royal National Theatre in London. From 1994 to 2001, he graced King's College London as a Professor of Composition, a position later filled by George Benjamin.
