Born in Brooklyn, New York, Harvey Fierstein's artistic ambitions manifested early on. By age 11, he had performed in a local community theater, and by 15, he was a drag queen in Manhattan nightclubs. His professional acting debut came in Andy Warhol's avant-garde play "Pork" in 1971.

Breakthrough with "Torch Song Trilogy"

Fierstein's breakthrough role was in "Torch Song Trilogy," a series of three one-act plays he wrote from 1976 to 1979. The plays initially played in small theaters but later moved to Off-Broadway and finally to Broadway in 1981, winning Fierstein two Tony Awards for Best Play and Lead Actor in 1983.

Film Success and Screenwriting

In 1988, Fierstein wrote and starred in the acclaimed gay-themed film adaptation of "Torch Song Trilogy," loosely based on his own experiences. He also penned the book for the Broadway musical "La Cage Aux Folles," which earned him a third Tony Award. Fierstein's other playwriting credits include "Safe Sex," "Spookhouse," and "Forget Him."

Television and Voiceover Work

Fierstein's television work includes a recurring role as Mark Newberger on the sitcom "Cheers," for which he received an Emmy nomination in 1992. He also wrote and starred in the HBO series "Tidy Endings" and has guest-starred in numerous other shows. His distinctive voice has been featured in iconic animated works such as "The Simpsons," "Mulan," and "The Times of Harvey Milk."
