Heidi Wieczorek-Zeul: A Life of Public Service
Education and Early CareerHeidi Wieczorek-Zeul was born in Germany and pursued her education in Frankfurt. She graduated from the Herder Gymnasium in 1961 and received her teaching credentials from the Goethe University Frankfurt in 1965. Wieczorek-Zeul became a history and English teacher in Rüsselsheim, where she served from 1965 to 1974.
Political Involvement
Wieczorek-Zeul's political journey began in 1965 when she joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She actively participated in union activities and held various positions in local politics, including serving on the Rüsselsheim City Council and the Gross-Gerau District Council. In 1974, she became the Federal Chair of the Young Socialists Union.
European and National Politics
Wieczorek-Zeul entered the European Parliament in 1979 and served until 1987, when she was elected to the German Bundestag. Within the SPD parliamentary group, she focused on European Union policy. She held leadership roles in the party, including Chair of the SPD in South Hesse and Vice Chair of the SPD.
Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development
In 1998, Wieczorek-Zeul was appointed Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development in Gerhard Schröder's first government. She continued in this role under Schröder's second government and was reappointed by Angela Merkel in 2005. Wieczorek-Zeul held this position until 2009.
Personal Life
Heidi Wieczorek-Zeul married entrepreneur Norbert Wieczorek in 1965. He later became a Social Democrat politician and member of the Bundestag. Their marriage ended in 1979. Notably, Wieczorek-Zeul acquired the nickname "Rote Heidi" (Red Heidi) in the German press.
