Early Life and Education
Heidi Heitkamp was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, and raised in Mankato, North Dakota. She earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Dakota in 1977 and a Juris Doctorate from the Lewis & Clark Law School in 1980.
Legal and Political Career
After graduating from law school, Heitkamp worked in private practice and served as a Law Clerk for the North Dakota Supreme Court. She entered politics in 1976, when she was elected to the U.S. Congress as a Democrat.
In 1993, Heitkamp was elected as the Attorney General of North Dakota. She served in this position until 2001, focusing on consumer protection, environmental issues, and victims' rights.
Unsuccessful Gubernatorial Bid
In 2000, Heitkamp ran for Governor of North Dakota but lost to Republican John Hoeven. She considered running again in 2010 but withdrew after Hoeven announced his re-election bid.
U.S. Senate Election and Service
In 2011, Heitkamp declared her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Kent Conrad. She defeated Republican Congressman Rick Berg in a close race in the 2012 election.
Heitkamp served in the Senate from 2013 to 2019. She was a moderate Democrat and worked across the aisle on issues such as infrastructure, veterans' affairs, and healthcare.
Unsuccessful Senate Re-election Bid
In the 2018 Senate election, Heitkamp lost to Republican Kevin Cramer. The race was closely watched as a potential barometer of the national political climate.
Post-Senate Career
After leaving the Senate, Heitkamp joined the law firm Mayer Brown LLP. In 2019, she signed an open letter condemning political repression in Russia.
