Early Life and Education

Rahmatillo Zoyirov was born on March 16, 1957, in Boghiston, Uzbekistan. He grew up in a working-class family and was an active member of the Komsomol, the Soviet youth organization. Zoyirov attended the Academy of Law at the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and later completed his postgraduate studies at the same institution.

Career in Academia

After completing his education, Zoyirov worked as an editor at the Kharkiv Law Institute and the Khabarovsk branch of the University of Marxism-Leninism. He began publishing research papers on jurisprudence in 1982 and has authored over 270 academic works. Zoyirov also had extensive teaching experience in various post-Soviet countries.

Political Activism and Founding of the Tajik Legal Consortium

In 1988, Zoyirov returned to Tajikistan and founded the National Center for Legal Education, which later became the Tajik Legal Consortium. He also played a key role in establishing independent civil society organizations in the country.

Involvement in Tajik Politics

Zoyirov entered politics in the early 1990s and became a prominent figure in the Tajik democratic movement. He served as Chairman of the National Democratic Party in 1998 and founded the Social Democratic Party of Tajikistan in 2002, which he led until his death.

Zoyirov served as a State Advisor to President Emomali Rahmon from 2001 to 2003. He was awarded the rank of State Counselor of Justice Second Class and Lieutenant General of Justice during his tenure. In 2021, he was promoted to General-Colonel of Justice.

Zoyirov was a vocal human rights advocate who faced numerous threats and attacks for his political activities. He survived 11 physical assaults between 2013 and 2018.
