Early Life and EducationBorn in 1966, Heiko Maas grew up in Saarland, Germany. He studied law at Saarland University, completing his studies in 1996.
Political Career in Saarland
Maas's political career began in 1996, when he was elected to the Saarland state parliament (Landtag). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Saarland in 2000. From 1998-1999, he served as Minister of the Environment, Energy, and Transport. In 2012, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor, Energy, and Transport.
Federal Politics
In 2001, Maas was elected to the SPD's federal council. In 2013, he was appointed Federal Minister of Justice by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Foreign Minister of Germany
On March 14, 2018, Maas became Foreign Minister of Germany in Merkel's fourth government. In this role, he has played a key role in European affairs, advocating for a strong EU and promoting dialogue with Russia.
