Aleka Papariga: Groundbreaking Communist Leader
Aleka Papariga, an iconic Greek politician, made history as the first and only woman to serve as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). Her unwavering dedication to social justice and equality left an enduring legacy on Greek society.
Early Life and Activism
Born in Athens, Papariga pursued a degree in Philosophy at the University of Athens. After graduating, she worked in various commercial and private teaching positions. Her activism began in 1961, when she joined the World Peace Movement and the student wing of the left-wing youth organization EDA. As Secretary of the Lampakis Youth Democratic Organization, she played a vital role in supporting the families of political prisoners.
Joining the KKE
In 1968, Papariga joined the KKE, where she dedicated herself to assisting political prisoners' families. As a founding member of the Federation of Women's Societies of Greece, she actively participated in international forums, representing Greece at conferences organized by the World Democratic Federation of Women and the United Nations.
Rise to the Top
Papariga's leadership abilities were recognized in 1978 when she was elected to the Central Committee of the KKE at its 10th Congress. In 1986, she joined the party's Politburo. On February 27, 1991, a historic 13th Congress elected Papariga as General Secretary of the KKE Central Committee, a position she won by a narrow margin of four votes.
Parliamentary Career and Legacy
In 1993, Papariga made her debut in the Greek Parliament as a Member of Parliament (MP). She was reelected as General Secretary of the KKE in 1996 and 2009. At the 19th Congress of the KKE, Dimitris Koutsoumpas succeeded her as General Secretary, while Papariga remained an active member of the KKE Central Committee.
Personal Life
Aleka Papariga was married to renowned journalist Athanasios Paparigas and had a daughter. She was fluent in English and Russian. Her unwavering commitment to social justice, feminism, and international solidarity left an indelible mark on Greek society, inspiring generations of activists and politicians.
