Heinrich Barkhausen

Early Life and Education

Heinrich Barkhausen was born in Bremen, Germany, in 1881. He studied physics at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Göttingen, where he received his doctorate in 1907.

Academic Career

In 1911, Barkhausen became a professor at the Dresden University of Technology. He taught electronic physics and electrical engineering.

Contributions to Science

Theory of Vacuum Tube Generator

In 1917-1918, Barkhausen independently developed the theory of the vacuum tube generator. This theory laid the foundation for the development of modern electronic devices.

Barkhausen Effect

In 1919, Barkhausen made a groundbreaking discovery known as the Barkhausen effect. This effect describes the sudden jumps in magnetization in ferromagnetic materials. This phenomenon has become crucial in understanding magnetic materials and their applications.

Electromagnetic Wave Generator

In collaboration with Karl Kurtz, Barkhausen created an electromagnetic wave generator that operated in the decimeter range. This invention paved the way for the development of radar and other microwave technologies.

In recognition of his scientific achievements, Barkhausen received the Heinrich Hertz Medal in 1928 and the National Prize of the GDR in 1949.
