Biography of Henry Gebhard
Henry Gebhard was an American pianist, composer, and music educator of German descent. He was born in Germany and at the age of 10, he immigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Boston.
Music Education and Debut
From 1895 to 1899, Gebhard studied in Vienna under Theodore Leschetizky before returning to the United States. In 1900, he made his debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Compositions
Gebhard's compositions include a piano concerto, Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra, which he premiered with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra on November 12, 1925. He also composed a Divertissement for Piano and Chamber Orchestra in 1927 and a symphonic poem titled "Across the Hills" in 1940, among other predominantly piano works.
Influence as a Music Educator
Gebhard had several notable private students, including Leonard Bernstein and Alan Hovhaness. He also taught at the New England Conservatory, where he had students such as Kay Swift.
The Art of Pedaling
In 1963, a book titled "The Art of Pedaling" by Gebhard was published posthumously.
