Early life and career
Kurt Dorner was born on September 19, 1910, in Wuppertal, Germany. He joined the police force and rose to the rank of captain before transferring to the Police Division SS in October 1939.
World War II
In the Police Division SS, Dorner served as a company commander in the anti-tank battalion and participated in the French campaign, earning the Iron Crosses of both classes. In 1941, he was appointed commander of a rifle company and participated in the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
Eastern Front
On the Eastern Front, Dorner distinguished himself in combat and received the Wound Badge and the Infantry Assault Badge. In December 1941, he was awarded the German Gold Cross. In January 1942, he became a battalion commander and was promoted to major in April. In May 1942, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
France and Greece
In the spring of 1943, Dorner attended tactical courses for mobile troops in Paris. In April, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and took command of the 8th SS Grenadier Regiment. Late in 1943, the division was transferred from the Leningrad front to northern Greece.
Transylvania and Hungary
In April 1944, Dorner was promoted to colonel. In September, the division was moved to Transylvania and then Hungary in October. For his actions in Hungary, Dorner was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross in November.
Budapest
On January 15, 1945, Dorner was promoted to brigadier general and awarded the Swords to the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves for his role in the Battle of Budapest. He was killed in action in Budapest on February 11, 1945.
