Biography of Helmut Poppendick
Early Life and EducationHelmut Poppendick was a Nazi doctor and the head of the personnel department of the SS Medical Service and the Reich Police. He was born on January 22, 1902, in Oldenburg, Germany. From 1919 to 1926, he studied medicine at the universities of Göttingen, Munich, and Berlin. On February 1, 1928, he obtained his medical license and started working in hospitals in Berlin.
Career in Nazi Germany
In 1935, Poppendick became a specialist in racial hygiene at the University of Anthropology, Genetics, and Eugenics. He joined the Nazi Party (NSDAP) in 1932 with the membership number 998607 and the SS with the number 36345, eventually attaining the rank of Oberführer. During World War II, he participated in medical experiments on prisoners in the Ravensbrück concentration camp.
Post-War Trial and Imprisonment
In 1946, Poppendick stood trial before the Nuremberg Tribunal for his involvement in war crimes. He was found guilty of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and participating in a criminal organization (the SS). He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was released in 1951.
Later Years and Death
After his release from prison, Poppendick lived a relatively quiet life. He died on January 11, 1994, in Oldenburg, at the age of 91.
