Early Life and Legal Career
Helvi Sipilä was born in Helsinki, Finland, on May 5, 1915. She pursued a career in law, opening her own practice in 1943.
Work with International Organizations
Sipilä became involved with various governmental and non-governmental organizations. She represented Finland on the UN Commission on the Status of Women in the 1960s and early 1970s, serving as Vice-Chair and Chair.
United Nations Appointment
In 1972, Sipilä made history as the first woman appointed as United Nations Deputy Secretary-General. She led the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs (CSDHA) until 1980.
Champion for Women
Sipilä was a vocal advocate for women's rights. She was involved in organizing the first World Conference on Women in Mexico and influenced the designation of the UN Decade for Women. She also played a key role in establishing UNIFEM in 1976.
Presidential Candidacy and Later Career
In 1982, Sipilä became the first female presidential candidate in Finland, representing the Liberal People's Party. She continued to hold leadership positions in international organizations, including the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Zonta International, and the International Council of Women.
Honors and Legacy
Sipilä was awarded twelve honorary doctorates. She passed away on May 15, 2009, at the age of 94. Her contributions to the fight for women's rights and her pioneering achievements continue to inspire women worldwide.
