Biography of Heinrich Hübschmann
Heinrich Hübschmann (also spelled Hübschman or Hübschmann) was a German philologist, born on July 1, 1848, in Erfurt, Germany. He passed away on January 21, 1908, in Strasbourg. He was a representative of the Indo-European comparative linguistics, specifically focusing on the field of mlađogrammatics.
Contributions to Linguistics
Hübschmann was a professor at the University of Strasbourg and is best known for his work as an Armenologist and Iranologist. He was the first to establish the unique position of the Armenian language within the Iranian group, which was previously classified differently. He also determined the affiliation of the Afghan language to the Iranian group, which was previously considered either Indian or intermediate between Indian and Iranian languages.
Hübschmann's works on the Avesta and Iranian languages were published in "Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgendändischen Gesellschaft," "Zeitschrift für vergleichende Sprachforschung" by Kuhn, and in the works of the Munich Academy.
