Henry Jaynes Fonda was an American actor who was known for his distinctive style and his ability to portray American pioneers and honorable individuals on screen. He appeared in over 80 films during his career, including notable movies such as "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), "My Darling Clementine" (1946), "12 Angry Men" (1957), and "On Golden Pond" (1981), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.
Family and Career
Born on May 16, 1905, in Grand Island, Nebraska, Henry Fonda was the father of actress Jane Fonda and actor and director Peter Fonda. While he enjoyed working in film, Fonda found the greatest pleasure in his work on stage. In 1974, he performed a one-man show on Broadway and suffered a heart attack in the dressing room. Fonda underwent surgery and had a special device implanted to regulate his heart rhythm.
Later Life and Legacy
Despite the surgery, Fonda's health continued to deteriorate, and he was hospitalized again eight years later. According to his wife, his death was painless. She stated, "Henry spent the night very well. He talked to us and never lost consciousness. In the morning, he woke up, sat in bed, and after a while, he stopped breathing." As per Fonda's wishes, his eyes were donated to the Manhattan Eye Bank, and his body was cremated. He had requested no funeral service. In his will, Fonda left all his money to his wife, believing that his children could take care of themselves.
