Henry Kellett, Arctic Navigator and Admiral

Henry Kellett was a renowned English Arctic navigator and vice-admiral.

Early Naval Career

Kellett's naval career began with the pursuit of slave ships off the west coast of Africa. He later commanded a vessel during the First Opium War.

Arctic Explorations

In 1848-1850, Kellett embarked on voyages into the Chukchi Sea aboard HMS Herald. He discovered and named Herald Island in 1849.

Franklin Search Expedition

In 1852-1854, Kellett co-led an expedition to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago to search for the lost explorer John Franklin. During the expedition, they discovered and charted the western coast and interior of Prince Patrick Island, the northwestern coast of Melville Island, Emerald Island, and the straits of Fitzwilliam and Kellett.

Later Career

Kellett subsequently held the position of Commander-in-Chief of the British Fleet's China Station from 1869-1871.

Legacy

A cape and a strait between Melville and Eglinton Islands bear Kellett's name. In 1988, participants in a long-term expedition to Herald Island named a mountain on the island "Kellett's Peak."
