Versatile Actor

Herbert Anderson had a total of 109 roles in movies and TV shows, spanning 35 years from 1940 to 1975. He was one of the most sought-after actors of the 1940s and 1950s. Although he will always be associated with the character of Henry Mitchell from "Dennis the Menace," Anderson was a remarkable character actor capable of instant transformation. His uncanny resemblance to the comic strip character's father likely played a role in his casting.

In both film and television, Anderson often portrayed likable, quiet characters, typically wearing horn-rimmed glasses. He played friends of the main characters, young suitors of leading ladies in his early years, and later took on roles as businessmen, fathers, and neighbors. He had a charming triangular face, dark hair, blue eyes, a naive smile, and a soft, kind voice.

Notable Roles

Among Anderson's notable roles was Pvt. Hanson in the World War II drama "Battleground" in 1949, Dr. Barclay in the biographical drama "The Girl in White" in 1952, and Breezy, the pilot, in the excellent film "Island in the Sky" with John Wayne in 1953.

Personal Life and Legacy

Herbert Anderson was married to Mary Anderson, and they had two children, a daughter named Babbie and a son named Nick, who gave them four grandchildren. Anderson retired from acting in 1982 after undergoing heart surgery. He passed away on June 11, 1994, in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 77, due to complications from a stroke.
