Early Life and Education
German ComposerEdgar Brust was a renowned German composer best known for composing the anthem of East Prussia, "Ostpreu?enlied." Born in Königsberg, he resided by the Castle Pond on the banks of the Pregolya River. Brust discovered his passion for music at an early age and began playing the organ at the Löbenicht Church at the age of 16.
Formal Training in Music
In 1919, Brust embarked on his formal musical education at the prestigious Berlin Conservatory. He studied under renowned professors, including Siegfried Ochs and Friedrich Ernst Koch, and specialized in composition. Upon completing his studies in 1922, Brust returned to Königsberg.
Radio and Composition Career
Radio Station East FairBrust found employment at the Radio Station of the East Fair in Königsberg. During his tenure there, he composed numerous musical works, many of which paid homage to his beloved East Prussian homeland. A prolific composer, he left behind a legacy of 96 compositions, including songs, choral pieces, and organ works.
Anthem of East Prussia
Collaboration with Erich HannighoferIn the early 1930s, Brust collaborated with lyricist Erich Hannighofer to create the iconic "Ostpreu?enlied," which swiftly replaced Johanna Ambrosius's former anthem as the official song of East Prussia. This anthem became deeply intertwined with the cultural identity of the region.
National Socialism and War
Joining the Nazi PartyIn May 1937, Brust joined the National Socialist Party. His musical creations during this period included cantatas extolling the virtues of National Socialism. In 1941, he was conscripted into the Wehrmacht.
Post-War Years
BremervördeTowards the end of World War II, Brust sailed to Bremerhaven on a ship. He settled in the town and remained there until his passing. In his later years, he worked as an organist and dedicated himself to teaching music.
