A Trailblazing Musician and Educator
Herman Dossenbach, an American violinist and conductor, was born to German immigrants. His transformative contributions to the Rochester music scene propelled the city into the annals of musical excellence.
Founding the Rochester Symphony Orchestra
In 1900, Dossenbach established the Dossenbach Orchestra in Rochester. In 1912, the ensemble evolved into the Rochester Symphony Orchestra, becoming a beloved fixture in the community.
Establishing a Music Education Legacy
In collaboration with pianist Alf Klingenberg, Dossenbach founded a private music school in 1912. Known as the DKG School, after the initials of Dossenbach, Klingenberg, and organist Oscar Garisson, it later became the Institute of Musical Art.
Partnership with George Eastman
In 1918, the institute was acquired by inventor, businessman, and philanthropist George Eastman. This acquisition laid the foundation for the renowned Eastman School of Music.
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra
In 1919, the Rochester Symphony Orchestra was dissolved to pave the way for the creation of a new orchestra closely affiliated with the Eastman School of Music. Dossenbach played a key role in the orchestra's establishment.
Leading the Rochester Park Orchestra
Following the passing of his brother Theodore in 1924, Dossenbach assumed the leadership of the Rochester Park Orchestra. He conducted the ensemble with distinction until 1945, leaving an indelible mark on the city's musical landscape.
