Herman IV, Duke of Swabia

Early Life and Accession

Herman IV was the second son of Duke Ernest I of Swabia and Gisela of Swabia. When his older brother, Ernest II, died in 1030, Herman became the Duke of Swabia despite being underage.

Marriage and Family

In January 1037, Herman IV married Adelaide of Susa, the Margravine of Turin. Their union produced two sons and a daughter.

Death and Legacy

Tragically, Herman IV died of illness in July 1038 during an epidemic near Naples. Emperor Conrad II, Herman's stepfather, subsequently granted Swabia to his own son, Henry I. Herman IV's remains were interred in St. Virgil's Cathedral, as the heat prevented their transport to Germany.
