Fabian Schönich: German Astronomer and Meteorologist
Early Life and EducationFabian Schönich was born in Cologne, Germany. Initially pursuing a career as a bookseller, he developed a keen interest in astronomy, dedicating himself to the study of mathematics and astronomy. In 1874, he earned his doctorate from the University of Gießen.
Early Observational Work and Moon Studies
Schönich established his own observatory, where he immersed himself in observing the Moon. His meticulous investigations led him to conclude that volcanic activity persisted on the lunar surface. In 1879, he announced the discovery of a newly formed crater near the Hyginus Rille.
Observation of Volcanic Eruption
In 1882, Schönich witnessed a brilliant flash in the crater Alphonsus, which he interpreted as a volcanic eruption. The existence of volcanic activity in Alphonsus was later confirmed spectroscopically by Nikolai Kozirev in 1958.
Scientific Contributions and Legacy
Schönich became a member of the Selenographic Society. He published numerous popular science journals, including "Sirius," "Gaea," and "Jahrbuch der Astronomie und Geophysik." His writings on astronomy and meteorology gained widespread recognition and influence.
